Dolly Parton, who died on 25 August 2026 at the age of 80 following a brief battle with cancer, became the most-streamed artist in the world in the days after her passing. According to data from analytics firm Luminate, her catalog registered 41.8 million streams globally on the day of her death — up from 2.5 million the day before, a jump of 1,549%. By 26 August, that figure had climbed to 79.7 million worldwide on-demand audio streams, placing her above every other artist on the planet for that day.

‘Jolene’ led the surge, going from around 196,000 US streams on 24 August to 4 million two days later. ‘9 to 5’ and ‘Islands in the Stream’ — her duet with the late Kenny Rogers — also crossed the 2.5 million mark in the US within 48 hours. Her own recording of ‘I Will Always Love You’, the song she wrote and later gave to Whitney Houston, reached 2.8 million US streams on 26 August. Eight of her songs surpassed one million streams in the US in a single day.

The numbers translated directly to the charts. Five Parton songs entered the Billboard Global 200 that week, led by ‘Jolene’ at number 16. Meanwhile, the 2003 compilation ‘Ultimate Dolly Parton’ re-entered the Billboard 200 at number 5 with 59,000 equivalent album units — the second-highest chart position of her career, for a record that had previously peaked at number 112 and had not appeared on the chart since 2020.
