‘Danceteria Afterhours‘ is now available on all streaming platforms — the new version of ‘Danceteria‘ that Madonna has recorded with Charli xcx. The release lands just days ahead of the MTV Video Music Awards 2026, taking place this Sunday, 27 September in Los Angeles, where Madonna herself will open the show.
The original track features on ‘Confessions II‘, Madonna‘s fifteenth studio album. Its title references Danceteria, the iconic New York club where the singer first made her name in the early eighties. This is the second remix in the ‘Afterhours‘ series, following the version of ‘Love Sensation‘ with Kylie Minogue. The press release describes it as “a celebration of bold beginnings and the influences that shaped each artist’s journey”. Alongside the digital release, a CD single has also been issued, featuring the Charli mix, a Harry Romero remix, and the original version.
The collaboration comes after months of speculation. Earlier in the spring, some fans read tension into the pairing after Charli xcx claimed on ‘Rock Music‘ that the dancefloor was dead. Madonna hit back on Instagram: “If your dancefloor feels dead, maybe you’re just playing the wrong music.” In June, the two were spotted sitting together at the Saint Laurent show before spending time in Paris. Charli xcx later described the experience: “We accidentally threw two parties. She’s so… she’s just so cool. She loves talking about the music she makes, how and why she makes it, and I found spending time with her really inspiring.”
