Miley Cyrus (now simply Miley) has released ‘Bass Persuades‘ on all streaming platforms — the title single and first taste of her tenth studio album, due out on 18 September via Atlantic Records.
The track was produced by the artist herself alongside Kid Harpoon, Michael Pollack and Maxx Morando. While the album’s teaser had promised a more guitar-driven, rockier sound, the single instead opts for a punchy dance-pop direction built on synthesisers, with a spoken-word opening verse that brings to mind Lady Gaga‘s ‘Poker Face‘. The result feels closer to the ‘Can’t Be Tamed‘ era than anything she’s put out recently.
The song’s concept is a celebration of the analogue in the face of digital overload: from nostalgic nods to the days when you had to wait for MTV to catch a new hit, to an invitation to “go analog” and look out the window. The music video, directed by Mert Alas, sees Miley transform a New York poker club into a spontaneous dancefloor, featuring elaborate choreography and looks that several outlets have likened to the spirit of Lady Gaga.
The album ‘Bass Persuades‘ will be performed live across two concerts at the Hollywood Bowl in Los Angeles on 16 and 18 October, with Model/Actriz as a special guest.
