M83 shares new single 'Blister Sunrise' ahead of next album 'I Wrote You a Letter'

M83 has released ‘Blister Sunrise’, the first single from ‘I Wrote You a Letter’, the tenth studio album by Anthony Gonzalez‘s project, due on 25 September via his own label Other Suns. The record will be M83’s first since ‘Fantasy’ (2023) and reunites Gonzalez with longtime collaborator Benoît de Villeneuve, whose history with the project dates back to ‘Dead Cities, Red Seas & Lost Ghosts’. Joe Berry and Clément Libes also contributed to the sessions.

Opening the album’s nine-track tracklist, ‘Blister Sunrise’ builds from a dense wall of crashing synths through layers of distortion before giving way to a sparse piano passage. Gonzalez has said the album grew out of demos begun in summer 2024, with a stated intention to work more instinctively and return to the looseness of M83’s early recordings. “I’m deeply disillusioned by the world we’re living in,” he said in a statement. “I wanted something less calculated, more spontaneous. More punk, in a way.” The album moves between guitars, shadowy electronics, ambient passages and fractured pop, with artwork by Jean-Philippe Talaga, M83’s original designer and founder of Gooom, the label that first released the project.

‘I Wrote You a Letter’ follows two soundtrack albums Gonzalez released under the M83 name: one for the documentary ‘Dakar Chronicles’ and one for the sci-fi film ‘Resurrection’ (2025). The full tracklist is:
